The problem is that a lot of us don’t really put enough thought into the exercise equipment that we buy for use at home. We might see a bargain offer on the web or in a magazine or we might talk to a friend who is raving about the new exercise bike that has revolutionized their fitness and general health. Our next move? We make an impulse buy that could go very wrong.
This really isn’t the time to make a snap decision as the choice you make here is one you will have to live with for a while if you want a solution that is as cost effective as it is fitness effective. So, before you do anything else, think about what you want from an exercise program.
Sometimes, the easiest way to do this is to think about what you don’t like doing from a fitness perspective and then to see what choices are left. For example, let’s say that you want some home equipment that will give you a cardio workout. Your trainer at the gym tells you your options (i.e. an exercise bike, a treadmill, a step or an elliptical trainer). So, how do you feel about these machines?
If you’ve always hated cycling, get bored to tears on a treadmill and find a step torture then your choice is made easy here! If, however, you don’t really dislike any of them then think about the kind of fitness results you want to achieve, take some advice and then make a decision on that basis.
Another issue that is worth thinking about here is how much room you have at home. This may not seem important but even small home gym stuff can take up a lot of room which can be an issue for many of us. If you have an empty room in your home that you can use then this won’t necessarily be an issue of course.
If space is at a premium then think about buying a small piece of equipment or one that can be folded away so you can store it out of the way when you aren’t using it. A step, for example, takes up hardly any room and even a treadmill can be folded down if you choose the right model.
So, you’ve made your choice(s) and bought the equipment that you think you need. The next step is probably the hardest one and the most important. You see, to get the best results from any piece of fitness equipment you need to use it regularly! Don’t fall into the trap of buying something on impulse and then never using it. This won’t do your fitness or your pocket any good at all.
